MARILAO, Bulacan – Speaking in front of more than 3,000 delegates and members of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) in the Diocese of Malolos, a priest stressed that, above all, service is the heart of the BEC.
“Become servants of communion and reconciliation,” Msgr. Manuel Gabriel, CBCP-BEC executive secretary, exhorted the faithful on Nov. 17 during the 11th Toldang Tipanan held at the National Shrine and Parish of the Divine Mercy in this town.
“God has chosen each of you to fulfill a mission in our mother Church and our society,” added the priest.
‘Go where people are’
Gabriel also asked the BEC members to “go where are people are” and renounce anything that can harm their lives of service.
According to him, the Basic Ecclesial Communities are “partners in spreading God’s love and His kingdom to our fellowmen.”
Meanwhile, Malolos Cathedral rector Msgr. Domingo Salonga asked the faithful to become missionary disciples.
“It is very important that our love is being expressed not only in words but also in our actions,” he said in his homily during a concelebrated Mass with Diocesan Commission on Formation chairman Fr. Prospero Tenorio, BEC director Fr. Roger Cruz, and other members of the Malolos clergy.
In an interview, Diocesan BEC coordinator Elizabeth Magturo told CBCP News that over the years, the BECs in the diocese have continuously developed lay servant leaders in the neighborhoods.
“Through our collective efforts, we have helped improve social awareness, not only in the spiritual aspect of life but also in politics, society, labor, environment, charity, and livelihood,” she said.
According to her the exchange of life experiences in each unit or ‘buklod’ meets in the BECs has produced “many positive outcomes.”
